While all of us have implicit biases, we can become better ministers when we move from minimalization behaviors, such as minimizing differences, assuming commonality, centering ourselves to understand others, and creating environments where others have to assimilate or “go along to get along” to fit in. When we lean into curiosity and “create space for difference to show up,” we can achieve greater levels of interpersonal connection and deepen our understanding of individuals, groups, and cultures different than our own.
